The Obama surge

From Talking Points Memo, today's polls, all including at least one day of polling after the vice presidential dabate:

10/4: Gallup Pres-Tracker: Obama 50%, McCain 42%
10/4: Hotline/Diageo Pres-Tracker: Obama 48%, McCain 41%
10/4: Rasmussen Pres-Tracker: Obama 51%, McCain 45%
10/4: Res. 2000 Pres-Tracker: Obama 52%, McCain 40%

Most represent an increase in Obama's lead as does the DKOS Daily tracking poll:

10/4:Obama 52%, McCain 40%.

Not only is Obama gaining, McCain's numbers are going down. McCain is bleeding badly. So he has decided to run all negative ads. I suspect this won't change things, other than turning more people away from his failing campaign.

How did someone people once respected come to this sorry state of affairs?
