As McCain's Lead Among White Virginians Shrinks, So Too His Chances of Holding The State's 13 Electoral Votes: 29 days until votes are counted in Virginia, Democrat Barack Obama is ahead 53% to 43%, according to this SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for WDBJ-TV in Roanoke, WJLA-TV in Washington DC, WTVR-TV in Richmond, and WJHL-TV in the Tri-Cities. In 4 tracking polls conducted since the Republican Convention, McCain has gone from up by 2 to down by 10.
There is movement among men, where immediately after the GOP convention, McCain led by 10, and where today Obama leads by 11. There is movement among whites, where McCain's once 22-point lead is today reduced to single digits. There is movement among the well-to-do, where today for the first time Obama leads. There is movement among pro-choice voters, where Obama's lead has doubled since August.
McCain no longer leads in any region of the state.
Now I've been suspicious of polls this entire season. Many of them were wildly wrong during the primary. Obama often outperformed polls in his run against Hillary. And the MSM rushed to hint or say outright racism was a big factor.
During the general election I have been suspicious of the polls on several occasions. First, I didn't understand how Obama wasn't further ahead. It is, as everyone says, "A Democratic year." It didn't make sense to me that Obama was not polling like he is today. My guess was that the MSM wanted to keep the race close for as long as they could. I just couldn't believe there was still that much racism in the country.
The second time I was suspicious was after the Republican convention. I just didn't see how that many independents could have gotten caught up in the nonsense over the Winker from Wasilla. That there could have been a swing of 12 points in some polls seemed like nonsense. And so I suspected some poll manipulation going on, again to keep ratings up and keep things exciting to us couch potatoes who apparently have nothing else on our minds - like our jobs, our budgets, our bills, our 401K's for example.
And now Obama is up again, higher than he has ever been, but the MSM keeps warning us that McPalin are on the hunt and are going to shoot Obama with smears from their helicopters. They're preparing us for another McCain poll surge. And that may happen.
Or it may not.
The MSM execs are looking at their 401K's too, and their futures if we suffer another Great Depression. And they are not inspired by Sarah Palin or John McCain. The winking seems to have turned off those with a brain, while those who think with another part of their anatomy, like Rich Lowry, are turned on. And that in turn has irritated the serious journalists. They have seen McCain's temper, his nastiness, his erratic behavior, and they are not confident he can fix this. On the other hand, they see Obama's intelligence and temperament and have more faith that he can do something wise to turn things around.
Maybe they'll stop messing with the polls and just show us the real truth: Obama has been ahead all along. Palin was a good story - for about ten minutes - and McCain's fake campaign suspension was fun while it lasted. But what is happening now in the economy is dead serious - and I mean dead. Yesterday in California a man who lost his job killed his wife and three children before killing himself. And in Akron, Ohio, as Congressman Dennis Kucinich informed Congress, 90 year old Addie Polk, facing foreclosure and eviction, shot herself in the chest. She is recovering in the hospital, but how does a 90 year old ever recover from a gunshot wound to the chest?
So as the nation's economy suffers a metaphorical gunshot wound to the chest, John McCain and Sarah Palin play games with the electorate and the media, inciting racism and violence in their rabid supporters. I think the media has had it. They see the new low McCain and his supporters have sunk to when an African American sound man at a Palin event is told to "Sit down, boy" and when another Palin supporter shouted "Kill him," at a campaign event.
Hopefully, the MSM will start telling the truth about the state of the electorate.
But then what do I know? I'm just one voter.
