"I'm an Alaskan, not an American. I've got no use for America or her damned institutions."
The late Joe Vogler, founder of the Alaskan Independence Party. Sarah Palin and her husband are said to have been members from 1994 to 1996.
So, Sarah Palin belonged to a party whose leader said that said America had "damned institutions" and he didn't want to secede from the union. And John McCain, with the slogan "country first" actually chose her to be his running mate.
Are the words of this man, whom Palin admired, less offensive than Obama's minister saying "God damn America," in a context in which he as discussing not America's institutions or what it stands for, but how it has treated native peoples and African Americans and how it has treated other countries in the world?
But we heard about Obama's minister for weeks, and we have heard nothing about his man and his party. Is that because we don't have him on tape saying this? Or is the media giving Palin a pass?
